Butterfly Volunteer Service - Lister Hospital
Long-term Conditions · NHS · Stevenage
Trained volunteer companions sitting with patients at end of life at Lister Hospital Stevenage, supporting families and the palliative care team.
The Butterfly Volunteer Service was set up in 2016 at Lister Hospital in Stevenage to make sure no one dies alone. Around 30 specially trained volunteers sit with end-of-life patients alongside the East and North Hertfordshire Specialist Palliative Care team, providing companionship and comfort when family cannot be present. Before the service started, 15 to 20 patients were dying alone at the Lister each month; in recent years volunteers have sat with around 650 patients a year. The team has received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service.
