Personal alarms and telecare (staying safe at home)
Carers & Family Support · Public Service · National service
How to get a personal alarm (a pendant or wristband with a red button linked to a 24-hour response centre) or other telecare to stay safe at home, usually arranged through your local council.
A personal alarm is a pendant or wristband with a red button that connects you to a 24-hour response centre if you fall or feel unwell, and other telecare equipment can help older or vulnerable people stay safe and independent at home. There is no single free national scheme. Your local council's adult social care team can assess your needs (the assessment is free) and may provide telecare, sometimes free or low-cost depending on your circumstances. This national GOV.UK page helps you find a telecare provider, and you can also ask your council directly.

Who it's for
Who they help: Older and vulnerable people and their carers
Eligibility: Older or vulnerable adults who want extra safety and reassurance at home, and their families and carers.
Not suitable for: This is guidance, not an emergency service; in an emergency always call 999. Whether telecare is free depends on your council's rules and a needs assessment. Many private personal-alarm companies also exist, but they charge a monthly fee.
